LiFePO4 batteries use lithium iron phosphate as the cathode, while the anode is a graphite carbon electrode. When charging and discharging, the LFP battery moves between the positive and negative electrodes in the same manner as conventional lithium-ion batteries. The main difference is that lithium-ion batteries have cobalt oxide and manganese oxide, which are poisonous, while the LiFePO4 uses non-toxic phosphate material.
These batteries have only recently gained momentum in the global commercial sector even though they have been around for some time. But why are their popularity and use rising at such a high rate?
Less bulky
Manufacturers’ main aim is to improve user experience, which is why LiFePO4 batteries are much less bulky than alternatives on the market. They are up to 70% lighter than regular lead-acid batteries and half as heavy as lithium manganese oxide batteries.
The light weight is beneficial in several ways. For example, it will help you save transport costs as the batteries will consume less fuel. Additionally, their small size means that they will occupy less space when being used in a motorized scooter or electric wheelchair.
Safe to use
Of all the lithium batteries available, LiFePO4 batteries are the safest. This is because of their phosphate cathode, which gives them stable chemistry compared to those using other cathodes. As a result, oxygen molecules are tightly bonded together, eliminating the chances of exploding as occurs with lithium-ion.
Environmental friendly
LiFePO4 batteries are rechargeable, making them a blessing to the environment. Furthermore, they don’t leak and contain non-contaminating materials. In contrast, lead-acid or nickel-oxide lithium batteries pose a huge threat to the environment due to their internal chemical degrading nature.
Efficiency and effectiveness
Performance is a critical consideration when purchasing a battery. LiFePO4 batteries are preferable to other batteries because:
• They last longer than lead-acid and other lithium-ion batteries. Typically, LiFePO4 batteries can last over ten years.
• They are lightweight.
• Better performance and reliability. Their runtime outperforms that of other batteries subjected to similar operations during their lifetime.
• Less charging time. Like fast charging phones, these batteries are made so that their charging time is as minimal as possible.
